His topic was 'Lessons from
Another Sector', being financial services. He covered board size, tenure
and refreshment; the role of committees; director independence and
experience and the role of the Chair; conduct, culture and diversity;
and board evaluation and remuneration. He explained some of the
changes in regulation and supervision in the wake of the banking crisis: in
particular the increased focus on culture, suitability and personal
accountability. He also drew some comparisons between the banking sector before
the crisis and the social housing environment today.
In the panel session he answered questions on the optimum board size, the challenges of managing larger boards, the dangers of over-rapid growth and how to build a diverse board which fully reflects the community which an organisation serves.
